How do you compare potential pine seedling performance across seedling providers? across provenances? across stock types (bare-root or container)? even across pine species? What information do you use to decide what seedlings to plant?
University-based research cooperatives provide upstream genetic comparison data for a given region, but as the seedling purchaser, you may purchase pine seedlings from many different seedling companies, across research cooperatives and provenances, with varied stock types (bareroot or container) and from varied orchards (differing background pollen).
At the Forest Owners Research & Technology Exchange (FORTE), we compare seedling options in our Genetic Comparison Test Series. The recent published report featured here compared pine seedlings from 2 species, 2 seedling providers, 3 nurseries, 2 provenances, and 2 stock types on a FORTE members land base in Echols County, Georgia. There will be some strong real world future seedling selection application for this supporting member and other regional FORTE participants that comes out of the results of this study installation.
Would participating in FORTE be a good way for you to gain access to applicable information to optimize returns in your forestland investments? For more information, contact me or visit https://lnkd.in/e64ZtQu
