2024 Western Gulf Exchange Meeting --- Antlers, OK

“Optimizing Early and Mid-Rotation Loblolly Pine Plantation Genetic, Density, System & Nutrition Decisions for Increased Returns in the Southeast Oklahoma and Surrounding Pine Growing Regions

8:00 - 8:15 am Welcome and introductions --- Derek Dougherty & Attendees / Host

8:15 - 8:25 am Travel to initial tour site near Antlers

8:25 - 9:30 am Tour Stop #1: A comparison of 7 different loblolly pine planting regimes with row widths ranging from 10’ to 20’ and initial planting density ranging from 290 to 726 trees per acre through 6 growing seasons. The consequences of the choice of deployment regime on cash flows and expected returns will be discussed.

9:30 - 9:45 am Travel to second tour site in E. Pushmataha Co., OK

9:45 - 10:45 am Tour Stop #2: A comparison of planted loblolly pine genetic block plots with seedlings sourced from the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Western Gulf after 7 growing seasons. Discussion will center on the risk and benefits of genetic source and level of genetic tree improvement deployed.

11:00 - 12:00 pm Tour Stop #3: Considerations for early and mid-rotation fertilization in SE OK and NE TX for enhanced survival, growth, and value production. In today’s costly and uncertain markets when, where and what production enhancement treatments still make sense? Attendees will view a fertilized and thinned stand on the edge of the loblolly range and discuss the realized stand dynamics.

12:00 - 1:00 apm Lunch in the field

1:00 - 1:10 pm Travel to final tour site in Choctaw Co., OK

1:10 - 2:00 pm Tour Stop #4: An operational comparison of growth and grade of 5-year old loblolly pine plantations sourced from an Oklahoma source and a contrasting and diverse Atlantic coastal plain infused seed source mix.

2:00 - 2:30 pm Return to Antlers, OK
